Value Point Mapping

A new strategy only becomes real when the work itself changes. This tool maps how future-state work will actually get done.

Aim

This tool will help you ensure that the work changes fundamentally — either to deliver differentiation so the strategy can be realised, or to become more efficient and conserve resources. Work is brought into alignment with the strategy by designing new work processes and redesigning existing ones.

Results

  1. Maps or diagrams that show the key activities, major outputs, tools and technology, and the intersections with roles and responsibilities needed to enable future work.

Pro Tips

You can also document pain points, or critical experiences. Keep in mind that you're designing for the future, not detailing how the process is performed today.

How to use it

  1. Begin with the end in mind: define the outputs required in the future state, then list the inputs.
  2. Define the value points — the components or milestones that make up the end product.
  3. Define the activities that create those value points.
  4. Define the supporting tools and technologies.
