Choice Prioritization

Not everything can change at once. This tool decides what changes first, and when each change goes live.

Aim

This tool will help you prioritize and plan the steps that determine which misaligned processes and other design choices should be changed, and in which sequence. Not everything can or should change at the same time. It helps you determine where the greatest impact will be and establish rough project milestones.

Results

  1. A comparison of possible micro design efforts or other organization design changes according to the impact they will have and the effort they will take.
  2. A sequence of the highest-priority changes and a plan for when each should go live.

How to use it

  1. Impact / Effort Analysis — complete an Impact/Effort Analysis by listing design choices that are currently misaligned to the future state organization, or that don't exist at all.
  2. Go Live Planner — create a high-level roadmap for implementation using the Go Live Planner template. Draw a chart with months or quarters across the top, then write out the timeline events and add them to the chart, moving them around as you recognise interdependencies. The rows can be tailored to your situation.
  3. Work Stream Planner — create a Work Stream Planner for the micro designs and other key initiatives coming out of the Impact/Effort Analysis. Using the Micro Design Work Stream Planner template, name the work stream, the key questions to address, a sponsor, proposed design team members, and the key processes or activities that are in scope.
